Ford Duratec Engines

Zetec/Duratec

The first Zetec-branded engine was the Zeta family, introduced for the 1992 model year powering the fifth generation of the European Ford Escort, the third generation Orion and the Mk.3 Ford Fiesta. The engine was originally available in 1.6 and 1.8 litre versions with a 2.0 litre version appearing in 1993 in the all-new Mondeo. The “Zeta” name was dropped in favour of “Zetec” when Italian car maker Lancia threatened to sue Ford for trademark infringement.

Production of the Zeta family lasted from September 1991 through December 2004. Displacement ranged from 1.6 L to 2.0L. It was replaced in most applications by the Mazda MZR-based Duratec 20

The advanced Zetec-SE (sometimes badged as Zetec-S) was developed in collaboration of Yamaha and Mazda, under the Sigma codename. It ranges in size from 1.25 L (1249 cc) to 1.7 L (1679 cc). It is very different from the Zeta engine with the intake and exhaust are even on opposite sides. This engine is sold under the Sigma name in some regions, while Mazda uses the MZI name. It is also sold as a crate engine by Ford Power Products as the ZSG. Rather confusingly, this engine has been renamed “Duratec” for use in the Mk II Ford Focus for Europe, being available in 1.4 L and 1.6 L versions. This incarnation also spawned a 1.6 L derivative with variable valve timing, known by Ford as Ti-VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing). This engine is now under the name ‘Duratec’ in the new Focus, Fiesta etc.

Beginning in 2004, Ford dropped the old 4-cylinder Zetec engines in favor of Ford’s Duratec and Mazda’s MZR design. The all-new Duratec/MZR was designed as a replacement for the Zetec engine and was developed as joint collaboration with Ford and Mazda. This includes the 2.0 L Duratec 20 the 2.3 L Duratec 23 and the all new 2.5 L Duratec 25.

Duratec HE

The Duratec HE is the name used by Ford of Europe for its family of small straight-4 and V6 petrol engines. The family includes 1.8 L (110 CID; 1796 cc) and 2.0 L (122 CID; 1999 cc) DOHC 16-valve engines and the 2.5 L V6 (also called the Duratec 25). European 1.8 L and 2.0 L Duratec HE engines are built at the Valencia Engine Plant in Spain.

Duratec 18

The Duratec 18 is a 1.8 L (110 CID; 1796 cc). Bore and stroke are a square 83mm × 83.1mm (3.27 in × 3.27 in). It has an aluminum engine block with cast-in iron cylinder liners and an aluminum DOHC cylinder head. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods and a one-piece cast crankshaft. Output is 125 hp (93 kW) at 6000 rpm with 122 ft·lbf (165 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. This engine is currently fitted to Ford models outside of North America.

Duratec 20

The 993 is a 2.0 L (122 CID; 1999 cc) version It is used in the  Fiesta ST, Ford Focus and Focus C-Max, Mondeo, S-Max. On the 2007 Focus, output is 136 hp (101 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The compression ratio is 10:1. On the 2008 Focus, output is 140 hp (100 kW) at 6000 rpm with 136 ft·lbf (184 N·m) of torque at 4250 rpm. The 2009 Focus Coupe with manual transmission has 143 hp.  It has an aluminum engine block and an aluminum DOHC cylinder head. The cylinders are lined with cast iron. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder and features fracture-split forged powder metal connecting rods, a one-piece cast crankshaft, and a cast aluminum or reinforced plastic intake manifold. It does not have variable valve timing. The power output is less than the Mazda version which does have VVT.

The Focus RS featured a turbocharged version of the 2.0 L Zetec unit producing 215 bhp (158 kW) and 310 N·m (229 ft·lbf) of torque, although badged a Duratec-RS. 1.8L Focus C-Max and Focus Mk II versions use a drive-by-wire throttle to improve responsiveness
